Curious, curious, curious....I'm not so sure I've come up with the right code either...but I'll present my reasoning and see where this goes.
This is a curious question. Strep B is a bacteria, and by far the majority of screening for it is done in late pregnancy. That is probably why there is a specific V code for antenatal strep b screening. However, this bacteria can also cause health complications in adults, male and female, as it colonizes in the intestines, vagina, and rectum. Unfortunately, there does not appear to be a specific code for it, or at least not one as specific as V28.6 is for the expecting mother....so....
Would it fall under V73.89? I hesitate to use that one myself as it appears to apply solely to "other specified viral diseases", which strep b is not a virus.
I see under the same V73 category that some codes do apply to a bacteria, Chlamydia. However, I don't think I would use V73.88 "other specified chlamydial diseases". Although strep is a bacteria, I do not think it can be classified or coded as a chlamydial disease.
Might it be: V74.8 "Other specified bacterial and spirochetal diseases? It lists several under the code but does not list strep b. (However, this is the code I would use, until someone educates me otherwise.)
Might it be V74.9 "Unspecified bacterial and spirochetal disease"? Well, strep B is specified so no....
I don't know where to go for anything further....
